He was known for a long time as international airport of el Salvador, has received the name of airport international Monsignor Oscar Arnulfo Romero and Galdámez; which seeks to honor the memory of this Salvadoran martyr who was killed at the beginning of the armed conflict which lived El Salvador in the 1980s.
Monday the President of the Republic of El Salvador, Mauricio Funes, made official the new name, in the day serving 34 years for the murder of Monsignor Romero. The President unveiled the plaque which reveals the name of airport international Monsignor Oscar Arnulfo Romero and Galdámez; the change was an initiative of the Presidency, which was approved last week by 54 of the 84 members of the Legislative Assembly of El Salvador.
The Salvadoran President also thanked United Nations by instituting on 24 March as the international day for the right to the truth, in tribute to the memory of Monsignor Arnulfo Romero Óscar. It also stated that in the future would be placed a monument in Rome and a bust in Havana Cuba.
Monsignor Romero was a religious leader who fought for the rights of the poorest in the country. He died on March 24, 1980, because of a fire caused by a sniper when you officiating a homily in the chapel of the hospital de La Divina Providencia, San Salvador in cancer. His canonization process still continues in the Vatican, waiting to be named a Saint, the first Holy Salvadoran.
